French Beginners Lessons

Deciding to learn French is a wonderful choice. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world which makes it a smart choice, as well as being fun to learn. Learning French can be a very exciting and fulfilling venture, but you need to choose your study materials carefully. As a beginner, you want to make sure that the study materials will keep you interested, that they won’t overwhelm you, and that they will leave room for you to grow. The qualities that all French beginners lessons should have are:

  • Interactive – This is true for any efficient language study program. Reading out of a book or just listening to a recording as the only mode of study will get tedious relatively quickly. When you get bored, you lose the desire to study and then it becomes a job. If learning is interactive and engaging then it becomes fun.  The more fun it is, the more you will study and get the most out of it. Lessons are best presented with multimedia, so reading, watching, and listening should all be involved. The audio component is very crucial in learning French language pronunciation, as you need to be able to hear the words and phrases spoken by native French speakers. Other important features are quizzes and games to gauge your progress and keep it fun.
  • Practical – French lessons, especially beginner lessons, need to be practical.  What is meant by this is that grammar rules and sentence structure are definitely important, but if the student doesn’t see how to use it, he will lose interest.  Lessons should incorporate numerous “real world” applications of the language.  A perfect example is the use of sample conversations. Every lesson should have at least something that can be taken and used right away.  Becoming fluent in French is a very long journey, so it is important to give the student some real opportunities to use his French along the way.
  • Challenging – French lessons should be challenging to keep from getting stale or boring. The flip side is that they should not be so difficult that they give the student the feeling that she can’t do it. If the student can work at her own pace, skipping through some parts quickly while reviewing others that give her trouble, it will be the best method. It comes back to the point that the lesson should never become boring, as the best learning happens when the student is challenged within her abilities.
  • Open Ended – What is meant by this is that French lessons should grow along with the learner. There needs to be room to continue on and expand. Upgrades, new volumes, and ongoing community support are all very good things to have. It is a big disappointment to find effective French lessons that challenge, engage, and entertain only to come to the end and need to find a completely new program in order to continue your studies.

As a beginner French language student, if you can find lessons that challenge, engage, and entertain you while giving you room to grow, then your success in learning French will be virtually ensured.
