The state of Florida is huge, so it make sense there would be more personal injury cases and auto accidents than in almost any other state. That’s why there are also so many Florida personal injury attorneys. Many people call these type of attorneys “ambulance chasers” but that’s definitely not a fair assessment.
As an example, think about the true story told in the movie Erin Brokovich. What would have happened to all those people who were dying of cancer and other diseases because of Pacific Gas & Electric’s willful negligence if a caring attorney (aided by the very stubborn Ms. Brokovich, of course) hadn’t been involved? Granted, that story wasn’t about personal injury attorneys from Florida but the principle is the same everywhere: personal injury attorneys go after settlements for people who’ve been hurt in some way and deserve compensation. Many would be consigned to lives in wheelchairs or worse with no way to make incomes if these attorneys didn’t work hard to get them what they need to survive. Some of the people depicted in Erin Brokovich were children who couldn’t defend themselves. And in some cases the parents were more sick than the children, so they didn’t have the energy to fight for them. If it weren’t for the tenacity of a personal injury lawyer, none of those people would have had the money to get the medical care they needed or to support them when they became permanently disabled.
Yes, I realize there are some attorneys who have rightfully earned the name ambulance chaser. The stereotype is that they have greasy hair and cheap suits, and they sit in their cars listening to police radios so they can find out about accidents as they happen. There may be a few lawyers like that but they certainly don’t represent the industry as a whole. I know for a fact that in the Sunshine State there are many Florida car accident lawyers that have a lot of integrity. Just as with all other groups, you can’t judge. And people should think kindly of them, because someday they may need their help. If it meant their being able to survive financially after an accident, I’ll bet you that most people would see personal injury and accident lawyers in a new light.
