Getting old is a depressing thought. For many, the cliche of old age means donning a blue rinse and glasses. Zimmer frames also become acceptable accessories! It is our skin which shows our real age the most though. Each decade sees us recoiling in even greater horror as we see the bags hanging underneath each of our peepers. And the broken capillaries under our cheeks. And our ever increasingly saggy jaw and bust lines…
Say goodbye not to good looks and common sense alone but to a number of other important senses to boot. Our ability to hear decreases significantly and our eyes also weaken. Relying on the use of prescription glasses every single day makes becoming old unappealing all on its own. But additionally, no longer will you be able to wear sunglasses , revealing clothes or fun accessories without looking like you are extremely desperate! You might not see the point in making any effort either when you happen to look like a wrinkly old prune!
Hand knitted cardigans seem to be the default clothing for anyone on the brink of sixty years. And uncover a love for liver and bacon and rain caps! This indicates that we also loose another sense over time; a good sense of fashion!
Aesthetics aside though, I think that the scariest part about becoming old is loneliness. You might have looked after your children whilst they grew up. This does not mean that these same children will appreciate the burden you will become as you fall victim to Old father Time. That old age home you always laughed about is probably about to become your new residence. There is a high chance that you will outlive several of the friends that you have kept since you were young. This means that keeping busy and/or making new friends can become incredibly difficult.
